Jewelry Making Process

How Melanie Miller Creates Unique Silver Jewelry

Using traditional silver smithing techniques with metal clay, I create jewelry in my home studio in Northern Georgia. I select unique gemstones that are timeless and have spiritual meanings from our Earth.

Metal Clay consists of microscopic particles of pure silver powder, water, and a water-soluble, non-toxic, organic binder which burns off during firing. I hand roll the clay on handmade etchings and molds of botanicals which pick up the designs. After pieces are fired to 1650 degrees, they sinter to pure silver that reflect leaves, branches, and natural elements.

My designs are inspired by each unique gemstone’s beauty and by elements in nature. I mindfully create each piece by hand organically and spiritually.
